The Salmon Net Fishing Association of Norway
(Noregs Grunneigar og Sjølaksefiskarlag)
The
Salmon Net Fishing Association of Norway works for the rights of
fishermen, sustainable harvesting of wild salmon and for maintaining
healthy and viable stocks of Wild Atlantic Salmon.
Net fishing has dwindled over the years, due to deminishing salmon
stocks and declining prices. In 1993 there were 3630 people fishing
salmon with bagnet and bendnet, only 1802 fished in 2002.
The total catch of salmon and seatrout(mainly salmon) in Norway in 2002
was 1112 tonnes, out of this 600 tonnes were caught at sea. However,
included in this number is a major share of escaped farmed salmon -
which make up about 35-40 % of the total sea catches.
Eventhough Norway has several threatened salmon stocks (especially in
Western Norway where fishing is closed many places, and where a lot of
the salmon farms are located), strong runs and healthy stocks are stil
the rule in the middle part of the country and the far north.
The Salmon Net Fishing Association of Norway works politically tp
protect the wild salmon stocks and its habitat, through lobbying at
parliament, media, and cooperation with other wild salmon organisations
(WWF Norway, Norwegian Salmon Rivers and several more).
The Association is also a member of the National Salmon Fishery Board,
and is representaned in regional salmon fishery boards as well.
